How I work
Thoughtful communications support grounded in experience, care and practical results
Calm structure for your next comms project
Communications projects often begin with urgency. A deadline, a report that needs shaping, a piece of writing that has to carry a lot of meaning.
My role is to bring calm structure to that moment. To help clarify the purpose, shape the message and produce work that supports your organisation’s goals.
A communications approach shaped by multiple disciplines
While my core services focus on annual reports, social impact storytelling and senior freelance communications support, my approach to projects draws on broader experience across journalism, public relations and marketing.
Each discipline approaches communication differently.
Journalism asks: what matters most to the reader?
Public relations asks: how will this message land with audiences?
Marketing communications asks: how will people discover and engage with this information?
Bringing these perspectives together helps me choose the right tool for each situation rather than defaulting to a single approach.
Communications work is rarely neat or predictable. Having someone who can step into the complexity and bring structure can make all the difference.
Putting purpose before format
Sometimes a project arrives with a clear brief.
Other times it arrives as a request for a specific format. Perhaps a media release, a blog post, a report section.
Before beginning, I usually take a step back and ask a few questions about the purpose of the communication and how it will be used.
It might confirm the original plan.
Or it might reveal a simpler or more effective way to achieve the goal.
Helping your communication be found and understood
Communication doesn’t exist in isolation. It lives on websites, in search engines, in social feeds and increasingly in AI tools that summarise information for readers.
Where relevant, I consider how content is structured so that both people and digital systems can understand it clearly. This might involve applying basic search optimisation principles, strengthening page structure or ensuring key messages are easy to identify.
Accessible and inclusive communication
I also place a strong emphasis on accessible and inclusive communication.
The way information is structured, written and presented can either reduce barriers for readers or unintentionally create them.
Wherever possible I aim to make communication easier to understand and easier to access. I do this through clear language, thoughtful structure and careful consideration of how content will be experienced by different audiences.
A calm and collaborative working style
When you work with me, the person you brief is the person doing the work.
I try to make the process straightforward with clear communication, well-structured drafts and thoughtful collaboration with your internal stakeholders where needed.
Clients describe working with me as calm and easy. Just like having another colleague alongside their team.
Sometimes communications work doesn’t need more noise or new ideas.
It simply needs experienced hands to meet you where you are, help shape the message and move things forward.
Senior communications support that builds solid foundations
Every organisation approaches communications a little differently.
If you’re looking for thoughtful, experienced support for a specific project – or simply want to talk through an idea – I’d love to hear from you.
