Client: Travellers Aid Australia

Front cover of Traveller's Aid's 2023–2024 annual report shows 2 passengers in a buggy.

The brief

Travellers Aid is a long-standing Australian charity and social enterprise that helps people of all abilities travel with confidence and dignity.

Each year its annual report brings together stories of vision, leadership and impact.

I was engaged to copyedit the report and make it clear, engaging and easy to read. The goal was to highlight Travellers Aid’s achievements while meeting the reporting needs of a registered charity and certified social enterprise.

The challenges

Travellers Aid supports thousands of people through many programs, partnerships and events. Capturing all of this in a 25-page report was a real challenge.

The report also had to:

speak to different readers including service users, funders, donors and partners

meet the rules of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and social-enterprise accreditations (Social Traders and People + Planet First)

reflect the calm, practical tone of an organisation that quietly gets on with the work of access and inclusion.

The approach

Having worked with Travellers Aid on other projects, I already understood their voice and audience. That made it easier to shape the content and stay true to their values.

I focused on:

  • trimming long sections, removing repetition and simplifying language.
  • using tracked changes and notes so the project manager could review and approve quickly
  • introducing an accessible-document specialist who built a WCAG-compliant template, giving the designer a reusable layout for future reports.
  • staying involved through layout to fix any small text changes and keep production smooth.

The results

The final report gives a clear and confident picture of Travellers Aid’s year. It celebrates the organisation’s quiet achiever spirit, focusing on connection, independence and inclusion over self-promotion.

The report now works as both a compliance document and a storytelling tool. Its accessible design means more readers can see and understand Travellers Aid’s impact, which perfectly reflects its mission of inclusion.

How this could work for you

For many small or mid-sized organisations, annual reports can feel like a heavy task. But with a good plan and accessible design, they can become strong communication tools.

Travellers Aid’s report shows how:

  • a clear structure keeps focus on outcomes and impact
  • early teamwork and brand familiarity create an efficient process
  • accessible templates add long-term value and credibility.

Client: Willoughby City Council

Front cover of Willoughby Cirty Council annual report 2023–2024 shows a parade of people in yellow raincoats holding red umbrellas.

The brief

Willoughby City Council asked me to copyedit its 25,000-word annual report. This publication sits under the Local Government Act and is part of the Council’s planning and reporting framework.

The report needed one clear, professional voice across many contributors and departments. It also had to follow the Council’s writing style and brand. With tight timeframes and limited in-house resources, the team needed quick, experienced editorial support to make sure the report met both legal and communication goals.

The challenges

The communications team faced serious time pressure. The full edit – tone, consistency and structure – had to be done in just 5 working days.

The report was written by many authors, from executives to technical experts, so styles and tone varied widely. My job was to bring everything together, keeping each section’s message intact while creating one smooth, consistent read.

The approach

With a background in journalism and communications, I approached the task in a calm, structured way.

After receiving the draft, I reviewed the content, style guide and council background to spot inconsistencies and tone issues. I then trimmed long sections, removed repetition and simplified sentences for clarity and flow. Across the report, I used a positive, confident voice that carried Willoughby’s key themes of resilience, community success and financial care.

Instead of several review rounds, we used one short round of clarifying questions. The first full draft was delivered on time – and approved with no further edits needed.

The results

Willoughby City Council had planned a second 5-day window for amends, but it wasn’t required. The first draft became the final version.

The Council later asked me to edit its next annual report and other public-facing publications. They valued my ability to stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing needs and deliver high-quality work on a tight schedule.
